Since childhood, I’ve found solace in poetry, a passion that has been a constant in my life. As a young girl, whenever I needed to escape the routine of the day, I would immerse myself in a book or write poetry. These creative moments allowed me to explore my thoughts and emotions, offering a sense of peace and reflection.

As I entered the workforce, my love for poetry remained strong. Before starting my workday, I would spend half an hour in a café, writing poetry. This became my form of meditation, a way to centre myself and find calm before the day’s demands took over. Even today, this ritual continues to be a cherished part of my daily routine.

In addition to poetry, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of birds. Whether in my garden or while traveling, birdwatching has been a source of joy and inspiration.

One particular blackbird, which frequented my garden for five years, became a dear companion and inspired me to write the Bendigo series of books. Our bond was the catalyst for Bendigo’s Lost Socks, a story that celebrates the connection between humans and nature. The journey continued with Bendigo’s First Flight, further exploring the adventures inspired by this special bird.

For me, both poetry and birdwatching are more than just hobbies; they are essential parts of who I am. They shape my perspective and inspire my creativity, allowing me to find beauty in the everyday and express it through my writing. Through these passions, I’ve learned to appreciate the small moments that bring joy and meaning to life.

My Writing Journey

On leaving school I pursued various positions of employment and really not knowing what I wanted to do. I tried everything from working in a warehouse to working on a stud farm overseas. I could not see myself going to university, so I studied literature and prose in my spare time. I continued my poetry throughout and in 2014 I answered an ad online. This was my step to writing a screenplay for a short film with director and producer Amit Jain, The Mirage. This was a pivotal moment for me breaking into the creative world that I had always found just out of my realm. Although I had been shown encouragement throughout life I finally decided to put pen to paper and write seriously, the creation of Bendigo’s Lost Socks has been the culmination of being able to rid myself of the imposter syndrome that writers so often suffer from. The release of the second book, Bendigo’s First Flight has also been a wonderful experience.

Connecting with You

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an author is connecting with my readers. I cherish the moments when readers share how my stories have helped them along their adventure of life. These connections mean so much to me and inspire me to write more of the same. I really value your comments and any reviews that you wish to leave. It truly means a great deal to me. As well as honing my craft and being able to help in some way for the next generation, I am a great believer in us all helping one another.

Inspiration from Life

I find that inspiration comes from watching the very ordinary doing the very extraordinary. Have you ever wondered how a bird can just fly at what seems full speed into a branch of trees and not get hurt. We can’t do that. Inspiration is when you allow your mind to wander and question the simplest of things in life. For me if I allow those rambling thoughts to continue, they can take on a life of their own.
